Interest in local politics and wider societal challenges led Martin to switch careers and focus on urban development policy, founding the EUKN in 2005. He speaks native Dutch, fluent English, French and German, and advanced Spanish. 

Convinced that cities are one of mankind’s most fascinating creations, Martin is driven to create more sustainable urban futures through co-designing strategy with policy-makers and researchers. He enjoys working as a trusted strategic advisor to policy-makers from local to global level, and is proud to work with a team of highly dedicated colleagues. 

Currently working on:  

Martin provides strategic, financial and operational leadership, and oversees external relations and acquisition for the EUKN. A familiar face from moderating events organised by the EUKN and third parties, Martin also leads a strand of the EUKN’s work within the CONEXUS project.

Lea holds a BA in Social Sciences from Düsseldorf University, an MA in Politics and Public Administration from the University of Konstanz, and an MSc in European Governance from Utrecht University. She joined the EUKN in 2016, and speaks German, English and Dutch. 

An avid writer, Lea is in her element crafting research-rich, engaging texts on the ever-evolving sphere of urban policy. She holds the European element of the EUKN’s work close to her heart: exchanging across borders and cultures, and finding commonalities in the urban community. From theory to street-level, she is fascinated by urbanity’s multifaceted impact on society.

Livia holds an MA in Architecture from TU Delft and a BA from the University of Roma Tre. She joined the EUKN in 2019, and has since contributed her solution-orientated and visual approach to EUKN activities.  

Livia is driven to create impact through innovative policy-making, with a signature urban strategist twist on her architectural training. She likes to challenge colleagues and policy-makers alike to think outside the box, applying design research methods and tools. Livia speaks native Italian, fluent English and French, and basic Spanish and Dutch. 

Currently working on:  

Livia develops EUKN Policy Labs, supports EU Council Presidencies, and contributes Graphic & Design elements to research and communications.

Federica Risi

Policy and Project Officer

Federica holds an MSc in Environment and Sustainable Development from University College London and a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from LUISS Guido Carli. At the EUKN since 2019, she speaks native Italian, fluent English and Spanish, and intermediate Portuguese.

A natural connector and active practitioner, Federica sees her urban development expertise as a key entry point to unpacking and healing cities’ relationship with the natural world. Consistently evolving her approach, she’s found synergy with the EUKN’s culture of policy co-creation to craft sustainable urban transformations.

Currently working on:

Federica leads the EUKN’s work within the CONEXUS project, restoring urban ecosystems with nature-based solutions. As the team’s go-to for green transition topics, she strengthens the EUKN’s ties with fellow actors in the field, alongside developing EUKN Policy Labs.

Noémie holds a BA in Urban Planning from Concordia University (Montreal, CANADA) and an MSc in Urban Studies (4Cities Erasmus Mundus). She joined the EUKN in February 2022 and speaks native French, fluent English, and basic Spanish.

Passionate about sustainable development and climate adaptation, Noémie is driven to enhance urban resilience through innovative policy-making at local, national and global government levels. Her international background has convinced her that cross-border knowledge exchange is key to improve cities and urban dwellers’ quality of life. 

Currently working on:

Noémie supports EU Council Presidencies and contributes to the ongoing CONEXUS project.

Adela Hankus

Communications and Policy Officer

With a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University College Roosevelt (Middelburg, Netherlands), an MSc in Spatial and Regional Planning at Utrecht University and a postgraduate degree in Space and Service Design at the Thomas More School of Applied Sciences (Mechelen, Belgium), Adela has a multidisciplinary background. She joined the EUKN in 2022 and speaks fluent English, Polish, intermediate French and Spanish and basic Dutch. 

Interested in visual and verbal communciations, Adela aims to translate knowledge into accessible content using an empirical approach. On an urban level, she is fascinated by green solutions, especially urban forests and the future of complex urban living which will need to adapt equally to the needs of people and the planet.  

Currently working on:

Adela deals with all matters related to communications at the EUKN, alongside contributing to policy and project work.

Marie is pursuing a joint French-German MA in Management of European Projects and Comparative Politics from Sciences Po Aix and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat Freiburg. She holds a French-German BA in Political Science from the same universities. She speaks native French, fluent German and English. 

Interested in the creation and implementation of EU urban policy, Marie’s specific focus themes are citizen participation and inclusive cities. Convinced of the importance of the EU in decisions related to urban issues, she aims to contribute to European projects in a field affecting citizens’ daily lives.

Path at the EUKN:

Marie’s professional field of choice is urban development at the European level, so she aims to gain better understanding of the professional opportunities that urban policy-making presents. During her internship, she intends to assist the team with background research on the Just City, supporting the French EU Presidency.

Diletta is pursuing a joint MSc in Urban Studies from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and holds a BA in International Relations from the University of Turin. She speaks native Italian, fluent English and Spanish and intermediate German. 

Diletta’s interests lie in EU policy-making on cultural strategies for sustainable urban development and sustainable tourism. She sees cities as an endless array of possibilities for out-of-the-box thinking and believes the EUKN is the right place to develop new ideas for a common urban future. 

Path at the EUKN:

During her internship, Diletta aims to put her academic background into practice. Driven by a deep belief in promoting urban sustainability, she is specifically looking forward to contributing to the team’s work on the CONEXUS project.
