The European and Global Urban Agendas and their Relevance for Cyprus

The EUKN organised a Policy Lab for its member Cyprus in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior. On 30 January 2017, representatives from Cypriot governmental bodies, from UN-Habitat, and from the EUKN Secretariat met in Nicosia to discuss the relevance of the two urban agendas for Cyprus.

European and international Urban Agenda are crucial as part of the Urban Policy Making, with a focus on cities' direct involvement and cooperation between various levels of governance. This Policy Lab aims at providing concrete links between these global agenda and Cyprus' role and definition of urban agendas. 

After an introduction by EUKN EGTC Director Mr Mart Grisel, Mr Phaedon Enotiades from the Department of Town Planning and Housing elaborated on Cyprus' role in both agendas. Mr. Tobias Kettner from the UN-Habitat Office in Brussels presented the New Urban Agenda. Mr Costas Iacovou, from the Directorate for European Programmes, clarified the use of EU Structural Funds for sustainable urban development. Mrs. Christiana Sizinou carried on by giving some examples of integrated urban developments funded by European funds. Mr Antonis Economides, from the Ministry of the Interior, further elaborated on local government and its reform to effectively incorporate European and global urban agendas. In two interactive sessions, participants discussed opportunities for further engagement in the implementation of the Urban Agenda for the EU and in the New Urban Agenda for Cyprus.
